A Reality Revolution Indeed!

Let's face it. As much as we love to hate reality television, it is not going anywhere. And there is not much we can do to make the quality of reality TV better--or is there? There IS something we can do my friends!! :-) Friend and supporter of She is Me and NAACP award winning actor Kaira Akita is on a mission to enrich our entertainment experience with her new production company Reality Revolution.

 Reality Revolution is a media & social action company that creates entertaining, provocative, and inspiring reality TV and social action campaigns that put women, minorities, spirituality, and complex social issues in a fresh new light. RAISING ROSES, their first reality show in development, will transform the lives of teen bad girls and we will hold our first event(s) for teen girls in 2013. In Raising Roses, a super team of fabulous, self-made women join forces with a celebrity host to go toe-to-toe with teenage bad girls and transform them on all levels.

Meet Shalee Forney...

SIMP: During your time at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, what is one of the biggest lessons your learned about college?
SF: One of the biggest lessons I learned about college while being at UNC-G was the value of diversity. Looking around and seeing a very diverse community made you appreciate life more. Some of us are used to being confined within our own communities, but college allows you to broaden your horizons. I learned that the world is not black and white, but multicolored. It has became something that I have grown to appreciate. I can say that it prepared me for the real world.


SIMP: Tell us about the work you do with Project Tomorrow?
SF: Project Tomorrow will consist of preparing young people for a tomorrow by instilling HOPE for a tomorrow. Some have grown to believe in having to become a product of their environments and do not believe in a tomorrow. My goal is to give them something to look forward to and to encourage them to believe in a tomorrow. Whether we are here or not, tomorrow will come. By doing so, there will be an encouragement for education, intense mentoring, volunteering, "after-high school" programs, and work related training. Things that will give young people courage and ways to look forward for tomorrow and how to prepare for their future.

SIMP: What do you think makes young women "Pretty Smart"?
SF: I think the inner-man or in this case, the inner -"woman" makes a woman pretty smart. Being a beautiful person on the inside first and having a heart to serve and help others. Also, having a drive and motivation to pursue anything that you set your mind to.

The Freshman 101 Workshop is designed to prepare young women who are High School Juniors and Seniors for their fresman year of College.

Young women will learn the "Top 20 things Every Girl Should Know: Before Going to College".

SEM Link hosts 4th Annual STEM Career Fair & Exhibition to Expose Youth to STEM at Georgia Tech

Then this event is definitely something you should be at!On Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 10:00am- 2:00 pm at Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc (SEM Link) will host its 4th Annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Career Fair and Exhibition. This event will provide K-12 students with an opportunity to explore careers and meet and interact with professionals in these fields. Georgia Tech’s Student Center Ballroom is located at 350 Ferst Drive, Atlanta, GA. During the month of February-Black History Month- The Garner Circle PR along with Mega Growth will presents The “Personal Growth High School Series” to promote financial and professional independence, as well as tools to build character and self-esteem. The premise of this high school lecture series is founded upon honoring the past by preparing the present for their future. “It is critical to invest in the lives and ambitions of our youth; especially, during the economic changes our country is undergoing,” says Garner. Mega Growth Beauty Brand Ambassadors and Nicole Garner, Founder of The Garner Circle PR, are proud to be leaders in this community outreach initiative.

Over the past months I’ve been looking for a mentorship program to inspire me to perservere to meet all my goals and better my future. What are my goals?
My short term goals are:

1. Have a talent agent by the time I graduate
2. to appear as a an extra or more on television or film by the time I am 18
3. work in the entertainment industry- Public Relations, manage, produce, songwrite
4. become a household name and well respected actor & singer
5. become one of the top 10 teen performers in Atlanta

It seems like now-a-days I live in a generation where everyone goes about their business & feels it’s necessary to go out and get “yours” because no one else will do it for you. I totally agree. Achieving by yourself gives success much more worth in the long run. But sometimes you need a strong base of people that will expect & encourage the best in you. I found a place that will give me that “push”. The She in Me Program™, founded by Miss Bessie A. Winn- Afeku was introduced to me by Miss Leslie Young A mentor and contact of mine, Miss Leslie & Miss Bessie introduced me to an opportunity to shadow Nicole Garner, CEO of The Garner Circle PR. The opportunity was extended to me and I was put to work! The art of networking is amazing I tell you!

Are You a Passionate Youth Leader Committed to Service?

generationOn is looking for young people between the ages of 13-18 who are interested in partnering with other youth from around the country who are passionate about making a difference. Council members will be required to demonstrate a strong commitment to volunteerism, philanthropy and generationOn’s mission, which is “to inspire, equip, and mobilize youth to take action that changes the world and themselves through service.”  Members will also be encouraged to represent generationOn at conferences and special events. 

Students interested in applying should be enrolled in middle or high school (6^th – 11^th grade), live in the United States and be available to travel March 18-22 (all expenses paid). Community, youth, and faith-based organizations and educators are invited to encourage youth who are interested in applying to fill out an online application which can be found at www.generationon.org/global/big-happenings/youth-advisory-council. The 2011 Youth Advisory Council members will be announced in late February, 2011.

Finding the Right College for You

Finding the right College to attend is a very important decision, and a very hard one. Here are just a few things to consider:

1. Take time to identify who you are before you start to pick individual colleges

2. What make to school you want to go to unique?

3. If you have a disability, will this college/university cater to your needs?

4. What is the average student teacher ratio?

Really MTV?

First is was "16 And Pregnant". Now "Skins" ? So where do you draw line when it comes to promoting promiscuity in young people? Or maybe you don't.

A Day in Her Shoes..

Have you ever wanted to know exactly what it would be like to 'walk a mile' in the shoes of someone who is exactly where you would like to be career wise and when you grow up :) ? Well, here is your chance!

The She is Me Program, Inc. has partnered with The Garner Circle PR to give you the opportunity to have a behind the scenes look of the ins and outs of the public relations profession.

All you need to do is write and essay in 500 words or less about one of the following:

1) How would use public relations to impact society?

2) What is a social cause that you are passionate about and how would

you bring awareness to it?

3) If you were to meet yourself 20 years from now; who would 'you' be meeting?

You must also:

Be a high school senior in the metro Atlanta area  (or DeKalb, Fulton, Clayton, Cobb, Gwinnett counties).

OR

Be a freshman in College.

 AND

 Be a member of The She is Me Program (if not already a member).

We.Stop.Hate. With Emily-Anne Rigal

Meet Emily-Anne Rigal, a 16 year old girl that is on a mission to "stop hate". She is pretty, smart, driven, and ppassionate about social change and youth empowerment. Emily is also the founder and director of WeStopHate.org. A program that is raising teen-esteem through the power of online videos and social media. Above is one of her many videos, which by the way has had over 35,000 views on a channel that has 6,500 loyal teen subscribers--> talk about positive influence! We had a change to chat with this phenomenal social change agent to get to know her a little bit more.
